Under Giovanni Trapattoni team, Inter Milan was once again involved in the battle for the Serie A title, coming up just short to Sampdoria. As a consolation Inter won the UEFA Cup following a 2-0 victory at home and a 1-0 defeat in Rome against Roma in an all-Italian contest in the final.
