Ferencváros beat Olympiacos 3–1 at home in the first round on 10 September 1996  Ferencváros beat Olympiacos 3–0 in Pireus, Greece on 24 September 1996. On 15 October 1996, Ferencváros beat Newcastle United 3–2 at home, but on the return match Newcastle beat Ferencváros 4–0 at the St James' Park on 29 October 1996.
