The US Cup was a mini-tournament that was organized seven times, with the 1992 edition being the first. Four teams participated in the tournament, each playing against all the others. The team that finished with the most points won the competition.
That year, Portugal finished in fourth place, having lost two games against the hosts and the Republic of Ireland, and drawn against Italy. The attendance at that game, of more than 55,000 spectators, was then a record for a soccer match played in the USA. This type of shirt, with the number on the front, was only used during the tournament and subsequently in one more game.
