1958 FIFA World Cup which was held in Sweden, Hungary seed in Group 3 with hosts Sweden, Wales and Mexico. Hungary played their first match against Wales at the Jarnvallen stadium in Sandviken and the final result was 1–1. The second group match was played against the host country, Sweden. Hungary lost 2–1 in the Råsunda Stadium, Solna. Although Hungary won their last group match against Mexico at the Jarnvallen stadium in Sandvinken,they were eliminated from the World Cup after losing a play-off to Wales, who they had drawn level with on points. The Welsh beat the once-mighty Hungarians in a play-off match to decide which nation should follow Sweden into the knock-out stage. Wales topped Hungary to advance with hosts Sweden.
Againts Mexico June 15, Hungary used the white socks. Hungary change white kits used once on the play-off match against Wales. For note, from the 1954 team, only goalkeeper Gyula Grosics, defender Jozsef Bozsik and forward Nándor Hidegkuti remained.
